There are 13 species of mosquitoes known to be capable of transmitting the West Nile Virus.  Of the 13 species 10 were found to be present in Dauphin County in 2000.  Six of the species are “container breeding” mosquitoes.  So, the best way to prevent the transmission of the virus from these species is to eliminate the habitats that these mosquitoes require to breed.  The following are possible habitats that homeowners can check and eliminate themselves:

§        Tin Cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots and containers that have become overgrown by aquatic plants

§        Discarded tires

§        Recycling containers left outdoors

§        Clogged roof gutters

§        Plastic wading pools

§        Wheelbarrows and bird baths

§        Ornamental pools not stocked with fish, water gardens, swimming pools untended for more than four (4) days, swimming pool covers

§        Waste water treatment lagoons.

Due to the impossible task of testing all the possible sites in Dauphin County, our best defense against the virus is for residents to survey their own property and eliminate as many mosquito habitats as possible.
